Security Updates [D1EE]

[Leo Knight]

Leo's apartment was, on the outside, entirely unremarkable. No extra security marked its door. Fast food advertisements, online game ads, and massage coupons (if you fill out your punchcard, the tenth massage is free!) stuck to his door the same as any other. While working, corporate cleaners were something of an open secret, but their private lives were supposed to be anonymous.

On the inside... one would quickly see that Leo kept his life anonymous by not having one. The apartment was tight; square-footage was at a premium, after all. But the lack of stuff made things a little more spacious. One couch, facing the television, neither of them particularly large. A chair and a small table, doubling for meals and officework.

It was on the couch that Leo currently sat, still wearing the suit he'd worn that day, careless of wrinkling, vest unbuttoned. He held a glass in his right hand carefully; he'd crushed more than a few when he was first upgraded. Not he could do more delicate work. Without feeling, he stared at the moving pictures on the television, trying to work up the enthusiasm to do... something else...

Approaching up to the door Nadia took a glance down the right, and then the left. This was not her usual environs and she stuck out a bit. A crisp and clean gray suit worn over a pure white dress shirt, pants matching suit finished off with black dress shoes. Stood outside of the door she was certain was the right one Nadia's eyes flash on for a moment, the silver glow emanating in the hall. Going over the request she'd noted down prior she confirmed what was said there and then checked the door number again. Another glance to others renting an apartment down the way exiting their room and making toward the stairwell she felt the nerves creep up her neck.

A subtle exhale she maintained her outward composure a little and then gave the door a few polite knocks.

The knock alerted Leo instantly, the haze of ennui fading with a rush of adrenaline. His eyes sharpened, one naturally, the other as a result of subconscious mental commands. A moment to get his thoughts in order, and then Leo drew one of his pistols and went to the door.

It opened inward, and by hand, and just a little; Leo hadn't undone the chain keeping the door secure. His slightly tan, slightly leathered, mostly unshaven features peered out, eyes narrowing at the curious guest. Ironically, her obvious nervousness made him relax, just a little. He kept the pistol carefully out of sight.

"Yes?" He asked. His voice was soft and polite.

"Mr. Leo Knight?" she asks, looking to him through the crack. "Elizabeth Mills sent me."

Stuffing her hands into her jacket pockets as she felt the awkward creeping sensation at the back of her neck. Standing out alone in the hallway in an unfamiliar place going to an unfamiliar person kept the hairs on her nape held in suspense.

Leo considered that for a few moments, eyes still narrowed. Well, she didn't look like a cleaner. Didn't mean she wasn't one. He'd be careful.

"Alright." He said. The door shut, and there was the sound of scraping metal on plastic. A moment later, and the door opened. Leo stood there, smiling politely, one hand still carefully behind his back.

"Please. Come in." With free hand, he gestured into the small apartment. It could not be called spartan; the spartans probably would have taken out the trash instead of stacking more takeout containers on top of it. Here and there were little signs of dirt or disarray. But the lack of furniture made it seem roomy. "Can I get you anything?"

As she entered she'd look around the room with an appraising eye. Nadia typically kept to her own space, part of the conditioning. However in this place she went a little further and turtled up into her suit a little bit. Hoping that little extra protection might help her from this place sticking to her a bit.

"No," she says, there's a detachment in the way she speaks, an almost robotic tone. Though she was certainly less robotic than a Bioroid, just reserved.

Leo stared at her a few moments, eyes narrowed, and then he nodded. "Okay."

Another few moments, and he relaxed further. "Oh. Right. You're here for the security thing, right?" He sighed. "What do you need from me?"

"Any network connected devices you might have. Your PAD for instance," she says, turning toward him with careful foot placement to make sure she didn't carelessly step on anything.

There wasn't much to step on. A protein bar wrapper that hadn't made it all the way to the trash.

"Right." Leo said, grimacing again. A moment of frowning, and then he reached into his pocket, pulling it out, offering it to the strange young woman.

As she took it, he casually tucked his pistol away. "What are you doing to it, exactly?" He asked, tone just a little sharp. He'd get confirmation from Mills before he went on any jobs or anything.

Nadia doesn't accept the PAD but instead suggests, "Just grant access when prompted," as her eyes gain a silver glow to the iris. In a second the PAD registers the request and prompts Leo just as she said it would.

"I'm going to scan over it and ensure that there hasn't been any data reaches, or backdoors created in your systems. Do you have any Ice present on this device?" she asks, a glance up even more noticeable thanks to the slight glow of her eyes.

"Okay..." Leo said, scowling. It was a nervous gesture. He didn't understand these systems, but he'd been pointed to more than one target by the work of a hacker.

Clearing his throat, he shook his head. "It's a standard company-issue PAD." He said. "I get it wiped pretty often. Once a month, maybe. Sometimes more." Every time he did a job. He avoided doing the math on how many jobs that made.

Nadia nods, her focus shifting into the space in front of her as her eyes seem to gain an extra level of vacancy. A slight twitch of her hand as she makes the complicated adjustments while still present here outside of the net. Eyes moving without seeming cause or purpose, a slight turn of the head left or right.

"You should consider an upgrade. Net-security is important," she says, the words coming out with no indication from her expression.

Leo waited, frowning, alternating between looking at Nadia and looking at his PAD.

"You mean like a new model?" After a moment, he shrugged. "I guess I can ask corporate for an upgrade. I don't know if it'll be a priority for them, though."

A throughout sweep of Leo's PAD would collaborate well with Leo's story. The constant wipes would indicate that there were some things that weren't updated, such as the FriendNet chat application and FitnessBuddi is currently a defunct program as most people have switched over to BodyPlus to monitor their steps and nutrition. However, it is a company-issued PAD at the end of the day, which meant that there was often some means to track their employees by GPS. There was no exception found here.

"No," she says, focusing again on a few final checks before the glowing light in her iris' dimmed. Focusing back on the present she glances around the room again as if she weren't here just a second ago, taking it all in anew. Finding that sense of presence where she was again she looks back to Leo, her eyes focusing.

"Your security is basic. If you are to store any information on here that you might like to keep confidential, I suggest you invest in system security. Otherwise, anyone is capable of learning how to access this device."

"Yeah, okay." Leo nodded. There was a short pause.

"Ummm..." There was a longer pause.

Leo cleared his throat awkwardly. "What does that mean?"

"I don't understand," she says, there was less emotion in her expression than most other people. Though she wasn't like stone, there was an overwhelming sense of detachment in the way she expressed herself.

"What does what mean?"

Leo grimaced. "I mean... how do I upgrade the security? I don't know how to do that?"

His grimace faded, but he crossed his arms over his chest. The cyber arm was more obvious then, especially as he wasn't bothering to wear his gloves.

"From the state of your PAD, it would be easy. Simply purchase and install a security program, ice," she speaks, her usually detached tone becomes even more so as she almost gets this droning quality to her words and demeanor. "If you do not know how to do that.." she pauses, a blank stare.

A moment passes, "Perhaps I could help you?" she suggests, but seems uncertain.

"Ummm..." Leo grimaced. For a few moments, he was silent, considering.

Then, slowly, he smiled. It was a bit stiff, as though underused, but it was there. "Yeah. That'd be great. I'd like that."
