[Day 6 - Early Afternoon] Side Event: Lunar Motor Rally

The Lunar Motor Rally is an event held quarterly by the local loonies of Heinlein. What started as a pastime for bored Melange Mining engineers quickly grew into a following of motor enthusiasts from all around the solar system. The rocky and unforgiving lunar terrain presents a challenge for many drivers, as well as the lower gravity, gives it further appeal. There have been many tall tales of racers flying across craters to some being launched into outer space, which is largely untrue even at top speeds.

Many will be taking part in the motor rally and it's clear that some have taken this very seriously with the number of sponsors that have found their way stencils on some vehicles. Each participating racer will be provided with their own lunar buggy for this race.

Choose Your Racer!
In order to participate in the race, each racer will be given a lunar buggy of their choice. There are a number of different makes that will provide a slight advantage in certain circumstances and also dependant on the racer's style. Of course, a racer might just choose to forsake these perks and stack their vehicles with sponsorship ads.

When selecting a buggy, please indicate the type on the first roll made. If the race is completed without indicating which one was used, the benefits are forfeited without recourse.
  • Sponsorship support: No bonuses. Receive +250 Credits and +1 Funding if the racer manages to achieve at least third place.

Improved handling: Receive +1 Boost dice on all Driving (Agility) or Survival (Cunning) rolls in this event.

Maintenance assist systems: When repairing action with Mechanics (Intelligence), roll at Easy Difficulty () instead. All Advantages earned in this roll are rounded up to the nearest even number, zero will round closest to zero here.

Fuel-efficient engine: If at least three of the five Driving (Agility) or Survival (Cunning) rolls have been successful in this event, reduce the racer's end score by 2 Time Units.

Rocket boost: When activated, the racer may make a re-roll of their Driving (Agility) or Survival (Cunning) roll. They must keep the results of their new roll.
Gas, Gas, Gas
The objective of the rally to get to the finish line. However, the lunar prevents this race from being straightforward. The terrain is harsh, grey, and lacking in traditional landmarks. This makes the race about not merely a matter of speed but keen navigation to traverse the lunar without getting lost. There have been many hot-headed racers who found themselves driving in circles. Lunar buggies are meant to take a beating but were never meant to extended use at high speeds. The race is also a long one and will put many engines to the test.

Racers in the rally may either utilize skill checks using Driving (Agility) to rely on their driving skills with the lunar buggy or Survival (Cunning) to navigate their team toward the most efficient path. The difficulty is determined by the path they take in their race. Racers will choose 5 Paths, in any combination, to complete the rally. Each path has a time unit attached to it, indicating the time it takes to traverse it normally.

The available paths
  • The Scenic Route, 10 Time Units base: Roll at Average Difficulty (◆◆)

The Rocky Road, 8 Time Units base: Roll at Hard Difficulty (◆◆◆)

The Daring Shortcut, 6 Time Units base: Roll at Hard Difficulty with one upgrade (◆◆)
Each Success deducts 1 Time Unit from the path and each Failure adds 1 Time Unit.
Two Threats results bestow one Setback on the next roll, Two Advantage results bestows a Boost to the next roll.
A Triumph result removes Two Time Units.
Three or more Threats or One Despair result bestows one Setback dice for the remainder of the race as well as 2 Time Units as the lunar buggy suffers from mechanical problems.

Stress and Repair
After each roll, the subsequent roll gains one Setback dice (■) for the remainder of the race as the mechanics and engine of the lunar buggy are pushed to the limit.

Participants may add 2 Time Units to their score to remove one Setback dice they pause to attend to their vehicle. This can be done before any roll. During this action, participants may make a Mechanics (Intelligence) at Average Difficulty (◆◆) to remove an additional Setback die. All Threats are converted to Strain in this action and every 2 Advantage results can be converted to one Boost die for the next race roll.

The Finish Line
The placement of each racer is dependent on the total accumulated Time Units at the end of the race. The 'top" three players with the least amount of Time Units earn prizes based on their placement. Ties are broken by the recorded footage and determined by the participants with the most Triumphs in the event rolled, then the most Advantage (this is not negated by Threats).

First prize: 750 Credits and a sponsor worth 1 Funding Point
Second prize: 500 Credits and a sponsor worth 1 Funding Point
Third prize: 250 Credits and a sponsor worth 1 Funding Point

When in Luna, do as the Loonies do, the Government bioroid thought. Racing was definitely not something that was included in the programming of Angelina models - or any of the NAG models for that matter. Not even on Earth and in streets! There were surely some Driver models employed by the government, of course, but those were completely different.

So when #19 was trying to find someone to team up with for the race apparently so loved by Loonies, they were sure they would be looking for a Pilot. They would not risk maneuvering them into a crater or getting their buggy capsized with their very limited capacities in driving. Acting as a Navigator would probably be much easier and less dangerous. Right?

RIGHT????

Oh, they had no idea...

As #19 tried to make sense of the annotations and maps handed over by the organisers, they talked to the pilot now and again, and both decided it would be for the best if they did not aim for faster, riskier routes. The pilot Lina teamed with, a young Loonie girl called "Lizzy", with a green and pink half-shaved short haircut with side-swept bangs and an attitude, was more experienced than Lina was (which is to say at least it wasn't the first time they were driving a buggy)... but given their total ability as a team, they decided to take it easy. For a similar reason, they decided to go with a model with greater maneuverability. It probably wouldn't make them a winning team, but it gave them a good shot at finishing the race... well enough. Hopefully.

The first Stage of the rally went on... well, enough, in a way. They managed to keep on route, at least, but didn't even try to go fast.
During the second Stage, the buggy started to show some signs of wear, but Lizzy even managed to kick the gas pedal some and gain some time. Not a lot, but hey, it was something!
Of course that also made #19 miss some landmarks, and by the end of Stage 2, the bioroid had managed to maneuver them into a particularly bumpy section, with crater after crater and not much space to steer around them. That, and some smoke coming from the Buggy suggested it really could use some work before they tried to handle that tricky section.

By now, Nineteen and Lizzy had talked about many different things already. Lizzy told her about the best places for punk rock and hard electro in Lunacent and other settlements, asked #19 about life on Earth and in New Angeles... they were starting to get into the tricky subject of philosophy of consciousness and how it applied to bioroids when they gave on up trying to understand where a weird noise was coming from in the buggy and decided to go on despite the poor vehicle's complaints.

Despite its difficulties and the imperfect car, Lizzy managed to steer through the whole of the bumpy sections of Stage 3 alright. That is to say, not really fast, but they didn't crash or lose a huge amount of time, at least!

The part they got to after that, again with #19's directions, was not much better than the last, though. There were less craters, but the terrain was so rugged that Lizzy was already dreading having to maneuver through it without letting the buggy fly up too far. That... and of course the buggy started acting up again.

Some more conversation went on as they fixed one or two more things together. Lizzy kept telling the bioroid the names of one and another parts of the motor and the transmission as #19 tried to get some things that were dangling under the Buggy to stay put. That annoying noise was still there, though...

Stage 4 was as hard as Lizzy had expected. They almost capsized once, but the Loonie girl managed to control the Unlucky (yeah, by now they had a nickname for the poor buggy) at the last moment. #19's guidance was definitely not perfect, but it seemed like they had at least improved over the last...

...how many hours had it been? Surely more than the expected 2, by now?

...well, they had improved! And by the end of Stage 4, they had come to a section that was at least a bit easier to navigate than the ones they'd faced before. That, and when they stopped and opened the hood for the third time, they FINALLY found what had been making that noise. Lizzy herself was surprised, and right when she called #19 to tell her what it was and the name of that damn mechanism... she forgot its name.

Well, they had fixed it though, so that was good!

Stage 5 proved indeed easier than the previous ones, although by now both Lizzy and Nineteen were quite tired, and it showed. They had given up on trying to get a good time a long time ago (in a way, right at the start of the race!), and by now they had probably taken longer than most competitors, they thought...

... on the plus side, 4+ hours of cruising the moonscape and dealing with problems together had given them so much time together that, when they finally reached the finishing line, each of them had found an unlikely friend of sorts in the other! So, you know the real victory are the friends you made along the way!

Right?...

Europop's (in)famous Deja Vu blares in the helmet of anyone approaching Jane's battered looking lunar buggy. A small collection of locals seemed to have dragged the aged vehicle out of storage and were sharing a few moments with Miss Doe.

"Of course I remember the way ɛemmi."
A taller and stockier figure chuckles and slaps the back of the buggy
"You are saying you haven't forgotten the time you wrecked the last buggy on that jump?"
A guilty shrug "...The corkscrew was just bad luck"
"Ah huh."
The lights of the starting line begin to flicker, signalling the drivers to approach.
"Ah, it is time. God be with you."
It's hard to make out Jane's expression behind her helmet but she does nod.
"And also with you. I will wait for you...and the rest of the competitors are the finish line."

The various buggies line up, a few even jostling eachother. Every type of vehicle was represented from sleak corper craft to kitbashed miner types. And then as the start signal above blazed down:

2

They were off.

Or rather, Jane was off
Day 6 Side Event Lunar Rally. sponorship support: no bonuses, daring shortcut race roll 1: 5eA+1eC+2eD 3 successes
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Her buggy accelerating with phenomenal speed as it rocketed out ahead, dove into a crater and then soared upwards and onwards.

That took it straight into the uneven and dangerous terrain of the Ophidian sea. Of course, it was a bit less dangerous when you stamped on the gas pedal and soared above most of it

Day 6 Side Event Lunar Rally. sponorship support: no bonuses, daring shortcut race roll 2: 5eA+1eC+2eD+1eS 6 successes, 2 threat
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

This made it a little more difficult for Jane to complete the upcoming hairpin turn and her batter buggie rolls and sheds from plating before quickly accelerating back onto the track

Day 6 Side Event Lunar Rally. sponorship support: no bonuses, daring shortcut race roll 3, extra setback from threat: 5eA+1eC+2eD+3eS 1 failure, 2 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

And then it was all
Day 6 Side Event Lunar Rally. sponorship support: no bonuses, daring shortcut race roll 4, boost from advantage: 5eA+1eB+1eC+2eD+3eS 1 success, 5 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Gas Gas Gas
Day 6 Side Event Lunar Rally. sponorship support: no bonuses, daring shortcut race roll 5, 2 boost from advantage: 5eA+2eB+1eC+2eD+4eS 2 successes, 4 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Her buggie flew through the finish line at top speed.

((I believe that is 19 time units))

Event Over!

1st Place: Jane Doe, +1,000 Credits and +2 Funding Points (6 Funding Points in Total)
2nd Place: Lina (NAG Mk3-19), +500 Credits and +1 Funding Point (2 Funding Points in Total)

It seemed while the race was long and difficult for Lina and Lizzy, they had persevered through the same difficulties as other Loonies that they've managed to edge out to second place! Ships and other buggies were sent out to find the others as there were a few beacons that were lit up. It seemed many tried the same method as Jane and took the most difficult way to prove themselves, resulting in engines overheating or tires popping. The Loonies were at least pleased that a fellow Loonie was crowded in the first place. Some suspect with the support she was able to garner in the race, they might be looking at the next district manager...
