[Day 5 - Late Afternoon] Side Event: Strikeforce Alpha Bronze Qualifier (Starfinity)

Part of the NBN GameNet large family of digital games, Strikeforce Alpha is easily the company's most popular and competitive game. In this game, players select a mighty and fantastic hero of their choice to battle their opponents alongside their team. There are several objectives in the game, depending on the map. Ultimately, victory is achieved when a player destroys their opponent's nexus.

There are often qualifiers held for Strikeforce Alpha around the world, entering competitors in a rather elaborate gauntlet of tournaments running all year round until the ultimate champion finals held at the end of the year in New Angeles. Gaming is a competitive sport around the world, often picking up their share of sponsors that easily rival the support found in sports teams. All players in the sport aspire to be the next member of a top-tier competition team such as Team QZD or Flashpoint. However, all players must start somewhere and that is often held at local qualifiers, hosted in local venues such as Starfinity Xtreme Game Arcade.

The Game
Strikeforce Alpha is played with a series of opposing skill checks with an opponent, done at Hard Difficulty (◆◆◆) for the purposes of this event. Skill rolls for this event can be made with Computer (SysOp) (Intelligence) or, if using a Brain-Machine Interface, a Combat Skill of the player's choice as their actions are emulated in the game.

Both the players and their opponent are accompanied by teammates, minions, and defensive structures. Their strengths are represented by Boost and Setback Dice. To start, each player gets 2 Boost Dice ■ ■ and roll against 2 Setback Dice (■ ■). If Talents are able to reduce the Setback dice to nothing, they are still considered present for scoring purposes (see below). Effectively, this means players will roll against an opposing Hard Difficult with 2 Setback Dice (◆◆◆■ ■) to start.

On a successful opposing roll, players remove one Setback from all subsequent rolls.
On a failed roll, players remove one Boost from all subsequent rolls.

For every two Advantages, the player's next roll gains 1 Boost die. For every two Threats, the player's next roll gains 1 Setback die to their next roll. A Triumph allows players to upgrade their next skill roll, while a Despair will upgrade the difficulty of the next roll.

The Nexus
If two Setback dice have been removed during the course of the competition with two successful rolls, the players are at the enemy nexus where they make their last stand. They must roll against Hard Difficulty with one upgrade (◆◆) to finally defeat their opponent.

If two Boost dice have been removed in this way during the course of the competition, the opposite team is at the player’s nexus. They receive one upgrade to their skill rolls for the remainder of the competition until they are defeated.

Once either player achieves their third success, they are victorious. Otherwise, if they incur three failures, they have lost the game.

Image
The Dragon (Optional)
If the opposing team has not reached the Nexus yet, players may elect to give up some ground to go against Lord Dragon, a fierce and terrible creature located in a remote part of the map. Fighting Lord Dragon will be a difficult challenge but the rewards provided could be very well instrumental to players winning the game. To fight Lord Dragon, players make a skill check at Average Difficulty with one Upgrade (). If they succeed, the team gains one Ability Die () to their rolls for the rest of the game.

If players failed on their roll against Lord Dragon, they will lose one Boost die in the same way that it is taken from them if they lost an opposing roll, representing either the team giving up ground during their side adventure or Lord Dragon claiming a team member as his meal.

Victory!
All winning players of Strikefore Alpha receive an invitation to the Silver Qualifier Tournament.

They also receive a BackSOFT Elite Plus gaming chair, a top-of-the-line portable massaging gaming chair that replenishes 2 Strain per use, once per encounter. This is perfect for hardcore gaming or for long hours spent on the Network. This may be sold immediately for 500 Credits.

#19 had heard some of the Committee members were going to the well-known Starfinity arcade in Nihongai for some sort of tournament. They weren't exactly used to this sort of game, but since Committee members were going, they decided to see what it was about... and if anything odd might be going on there.

As it turned out, the odd thing were just a large number of players screaming at screens, VR devices and at each other. And the Arcade even provided old, sweaty BMI interfaces for visitors who were willing to give it a go.

They were hesitant at first... but in the end they decided to try it. It seemed... fun? (Was that... fun they were having?)

Fun, excitement, frustration... there were indeed a large number of feelings to be had there, apparently. #19 joined a team with two humans (or were they clones? It was hard to tell at times...), who were somewhat uneasy about having a governmental bot as a teammate, but shrugged and rolled with it.

Right at the start, seeing the Dragon challenge at a different part of the map, #19 went straight for it, wielding a light, but agile pistol resembling those they were used to in meat(synth?)space. That left their teammates open, and one of them was taken out early, leaving him frustrated and angry. But one more attempt and the Dragon was defeated, giving the team an important boost in their next stands against the opposing team.

With the bioroid joining their remaining teammate and the Dragon boost active, the pair finally managed to take out one of the opponents. Right when the other human was starting to feel confident fighting besides the Bioroid, though, the team left one of their flanks open, and the second human player - was that a teenage girl?? - was defeated. Unlike the first one, though, she was laughing as she took out the VR device, and went to stand besides #19 to watch the end of the match.

With the enemies now trying to destroy Lina's team's Nexus, the bioroid leveraged the base's strong defences, some clever tactics and good shooting of their own, taking out another one of the opposing team and setting up a direct, quick advancement towards the enemy team's nexus. That did leave their own Nexus slightly more open to attacks, but it gave them a chance to counter-attack and turn the tables!

It was a long, fierce battle, #19 advancing, trying to run from one good hiding spot to another while shooting forward at the enemy Nexus, and back to prevent the opponent from reaching their own. It went like this for some good 5 minutes or so... but right before #19 thought they had finally found a good angle to shoot the winning shot, they saw the message on their screen.

DEFEAT! YOUR NEXUS HAS BEEN DESTROYED

They took their hands to their head, frustrated but excited at the same time. Taking out the sweaty BMI, that now also smelled of heated circuits and plasteel, they saw the female player also frustrated but laughing right besides them. "AAah! Good go, miss... bot!", the girl said.

#19 had lost - as they had expected to.

But they couldn't quite contain a smile.

OOC:
Assuming the threats and boosts from enemies/ allies count while fighting the dragon, and 'no successes' will remove a boost (since it counts as a failure!):

D5 LA - Strikeforce Alpha Bronze Qualifier; Fighting Lord Dragon! Ranged Light vs Avg + 1 upgrade; 2 enemy Setback, 2 ally boosts: 1eP+2eA+1eD+1eC+2eB+2eS 1 failure, 3 advantage, 1 Triumph, 1 Despair
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
Ignoring enemy Setback and ally Boost dice as per Boogie's answer:
Ends with 1 Triumph, 1 Despair, 2 failures, 2 advantage:
Result is the same: 1 ally boost lost; 1 boost for next roll; 1 upgrade and 1 enemy upgrade for next roll!

D5 LA - Strikeforce Alpha Bronze Qualifier; Fighting Lord Dragon! Ranged Light vs Avg + 1 upgrade, Despair and Triumph upgrades ; 2 enemy Setback, 1 ally boost; 1 boost from advantages: 2eP+1eA+2eC+2eS+2eB 0 successes, 2 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
Ignoring enemy Setback (2) and ally boost (1) dice as per Boogie's answer:
Ends with 2 successes, 1 threat; boost die may be considered the one with 1 adv (but actually, no result would make a difference as adding successes, 1 or 2 advantage would keep advantages/threats within 1 of each).
So: Dragon defeated! YAY!

(IGNORING NEXT ROLL I HAD DONE FOR THE DRAGON SINCE BOOGIE'S ANSWERS CHANGE THE RESULTS AND POSTING NEW ROLLS AFTER DRAGON DEFEATED!)

D5 LA - Strikeforce Alpha Bronze Qualifier; Ranged Light vs Hard, Dragon ability die, 1 ally boost, 2 enemy setback: 1eP+3eA+1eB+2eS+3eD 1 success
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
1 enemy defeated! 1 Setback removed

D5 LA - Strikeforce Alpha Bronze Qualifier the mission continues - Ranged Light vs Hard, Dragon ability die, 1 ally boost, 1 enemy setback: 1eP+3eA+1eB+1eS+3eD 2 failures, 2 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
Last ally defeated! Enemy's now at Nexus :( But 1 boost gained for next roll...

D5 LA - Strikeforce Alpha Bronze Qualifier Defend the Nexus! - Ranged Light vs Hard, Dragon ability die, Enemy at Nexus! 1 enemy setback, 1 boost from last roll: 2eP+2eA+3eD+1eB+1eS 1 success, 3 threat, 1 Triumph
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
Last enemy defeated! Both at each other's nexus now! 1 setback for next roll... but also 1 upgrade!

D5 LA - Strikeforce Alpha Bronze Qualifier The Last Stand! - Ranged Light vs Hard, Dragon ability die, Enemy at Nexus! #19 at Nexus! 1 setback from last roll; 1 upgrade from last roll: 3eP+1eA+2eD+1eC+1eS 0 successes
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
AAAAAAH Lina's Nexus is defeated I guess! That was a good fight!

"Yusssssssssssss!!!!!"

Ven absolutely loved gaming. No surprise there. He and the other two members of TEAM KIT KAT went through their pre game ritual/dance before logging in and preparing to fight.

"LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!"

Ven led the team straight for the Dragon and they absolutely flattened the big scaly beast in record time.

"NYA!"

With the bonus goal assured and their static defences holding solid they set off for the enemy Nexus beating down all before them with aplomb. Their Nyas getting louder with each addition to the chain kills. Their advance was unstoppable and they were attacking the enemy Nexus faster than even Ven thought they would.

"BURN IT DOWNNNNNNNNN!!!!!"

Ven triggered his character's ultimate attack and watched the Nexus crack and fall.

"Oh yeah! Who's awesome? WE'RE AWESOME!!"

The three cat persons celebrated their win just a little bit loudly.

After the excitement of earlier in the day, Nadia found a moment to slip away as she tried to do sometimes when the need rose high enough. Lately though things have been far more stressful and perhaps that's why she did something even riskier than normal, attending the Strikeforce Alpha Bronze qualifier. However, she didn't attend as herself exactly. Instead giving a moniker she wished to go by, one that made sense out of the white fox mask she wore. It wasn't a traditional mask, nor overly large, simply it was a way to cover and conceal her face without having to look down. In combination with the mask she wore the hood of a sweater over her head though she still had dress pants on.

Strange as the ensemble might be, none cared to think on it once she'd connected via her BMI. In this space, she accepted the role of a magic-oriented hero and also became quickly the lead of the team not by intrinsic value as a leader but being the best player her team had. Quickly her efforts guided them immediately into the fray with Lord Dragon whom they dispatched handily. Returning back to the field they had a significant advantage and pushed it hard to gain themselves some ground. All these good spirits had a strange effect on her team, and herself, as they all lost focus on the main objectives for a span of time and lost ground to the enemy team. Yet, this didn't last long and they quickly collected themselves and hammered home a victory that was swift and awe-inducing to some while aggravating to others.

Regardless, there was little question which team was better at the end of the day and who exactly the best player was.

[OOC:]

Day 5, LA | Starfinity, R1 (2/2) Lord Dragon: Sysops, Knack for It vs Average (Challenge): 4eP+2eB+1eC+1eD 5 successes, 1 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Day 5, LA | Starfinity, R1 (2/2): Sysops, Dragon, Knack for It, vs Hard: 4eP+1eA+2eB+3eD 2 successes, 5 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Day 5, LA | Starfinity, R3 (2/2): Sysops, Dragon, Knack for It, Prev Roll vs Hard: 4eP+1eA+4eB+3eD 2 failures, 10 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Day 5, LA | Starfinity, R4 (1/2): Sysops, Dragon, Knack for It, Prev Roll vs Hard: 4eP+1eA+6eB+3eD 7 successes, 1 Triumph

Day 5, LA | Starfinity, R4 (1/1): Sysops, Dragon, Knack for It, Prev Roll vs Hard: 5eP+1eB+3eD 6 successes, 1 threat
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

[I just realized this was an extra roll, and the upgrade should have gone to the last. Leaving it up so it's noted and displayed but otherwise I don't think the outcome would have changed in any capacity that is meaningful.]

Day 5, LA | Starfinity, R5 (1/0): Sysops, Dragon, Knack for It, Prev Roll vs Hard, Nexus: 4eP+1eA+1eB+1eC+1eD 5 successes, 2 threat, 1 Triumph
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Day 5, LA | Starfinity, R5: Forgotten Difficulty: 1eD 0 successes, 2 threat

Final Total: 5 Success, 4 Threat, 1 Triumph [Perhaps Nadia isn't much of a team player here.]

Overall: Victory. [1 Round Lost]

Victory! (Or Defeat!)

Despite being an entry-level tournament, the Strikeforce Alpha Bronze Qualified proved to have some rather tough competition as locals came out with their best efforts. Admittedly, there were a few sharks in the pool as well. The competition thinned out the competition over the course of a few brackets and only the worthy would find a place in the next rank. It is said that the Silver Qualifiers will happen in a few months and potentially stream live for the Network.

There would be only two winners from the committee today in Nadia Avaline and Ven Garcia-Estravez, who both receive an invitation and get a BackSOFT Elite Plus gaming chair, the only portable gaming chair approved by the pros! Or 500 Credits. The chair would prove to be a welcome addition to the long hours working as a Sysop, admittedly.
